COMPLETE RECORDED HISTORY · EVERY ERA · EVERY SECRET
⟡ THE TIMELINE OF HYRULE ⟡
Hyrule's history is not a straight line. It is a tree that split three ways after the Hero of Time's great battle with Ganondorf. Every era, every Link, every Zelda — they are all real, all happening in different branches of the same sacred timeline.
ERA 01 — THE BEGINNING
The Sacred Realm & The First Age
Before Hyrule had a name, three golden goddesses — Din, Nayru, and Farore — descended and shaped the world from chaos. Din cultivated the red earth with her powerful flaming arms. Nayru poured her wisdom onto the earth and gave the spirit of law to the world. Farore produced all life forms who would uphold that law.
When their work was complete, the goddesses ascended to the heavens, and where they departed, the Triforce was left behind in the Sacred Realm — a relic containing the essence of the gods themselves. The Triforce has three pieces: Power, Wisdom, and Courage. Only someone whose heart is in perfect balance can touch it without it shattering.
The Sacred Realm was protected by the Temple of Time and the Ocarina of Time. Seven Sages were chosen to guard the seal. As long as the seal held, the Sacred Realm remained beyond the reach of evil.
ERA 02 — SKYWARD SWORD
The Surface Below the Clouds
This is the very first era in Hyrule's timeline — the story that started everything. The human survivors of a great calamity were lifted to the sky on a floating island called Skyloft by the goddess Hylia herself, who sacrificed her divinity to be reborn as a mortal — Zelda.
A young man named Link lived as a knight-in-training on Skyloft. When Zelda was taken by the demon king Demise, Link descended to the surface world — a wild, untamed land that would eventually become Hyrule. He wielded the Goddess Sword, which would eventually be reforged into the Master Sword and placed in the Pedestal of Time.
Demise was eventually sealed away, but his hatred placed a curse on the bloodlines of Link and Zelda — dooming them to face reincarnations of Demise's malice across all of time. This is why there are so many Links and Zeldas. This is why Ganon keeps coming back. The curse of Demise is the engine that drives all of Hyrule's history.
ERA 03 — OCARINA OF TIME
The Hero of Time — Where the Timeline Splits
This is the most important single event in all of Hyrule's history. A young boy from the Kokiri Forest — Link, the Hero of Time — pulled the Master Sword from the Pedestal of Time. But he was too young to be the hero. His spirit was sealed for seven years. When he awoke as an adult, Ganondorf had already conquered Hyrule.
Link gathered the Seven Sages, defeated Ganondorf, and sealed him in the Sacred Realm. Then Princess Zelda used the Ocarina of Time to send Link back to his childhood — to live the years he had lost.
This single moment created three separate timelines:
• The Adult Timeline — Link is sent back, leaving Hyrule without its hero. Ganondorf eventually escapes, leading to The Wind Waker.
• The Child Timeline — Young Link warns Zelda and the king of Ganondorf's treachery. Ganondorf is tried and executed, leading to Twilight Princess.
• The Downfall Timeline — A secret third branch where the Hero of Time was somehow defeated, leading to A Link to the Past.
ERA 04 — BREATH OF THE WILD / TEARS OF THE KINGDOM
The Age of Calamity & The Upheaval
Ten thousand years before Breath of the Wild, the people of Hyrule discovered an ancient prophecy: Calamity Ganon would return to destroy the world. They built four massive mechanical Divine Beasts — Vah Medoh, Vah Ruta, Vah Rudania, Vah Naboris — and an army of Guardians to fight it. A hero bearing the divine sword and a princess with sealing powers defeated Calamity Ganon.
One hundred years before the start of Breath of the Wild, Calamity Ganon returned. Zelda and four Champions — Mipha (Zora), Daruk (Goron), Urbosa (Gerudo), Revali (Rito) — tried to use the Divine Beasts and Guardians again. But Ganon had learned from the past. He corrupted the Divine Beasts and Guardians and turned them against Hyrule. The Champions were killed. Link was mortally wounded.
Zelda used the last of her sealing power to send Link to the Shrine of Resurrection and held Ganon at bay inside Hyrule Castle for one hundred years alone.
In Tears of the Kingdom, an even older evil was discovered beneath Hyrule Castle — Ganondorf in his original Gerudo form, sealed there by the ancient King Rauru, first king of Hyrule. Rauru had bonded the Secret Stones to sages to give them divine power. Ganondorf had stolen a Secret Stone, swallowed it, and transformed into the Demon Dragon. Link, with Rauru's help from across time, defeated him.
⟡ RACES OF HYRULE ⟡
🧝
HYLIAN
The Chosen People
The primary human race of Hyrule, recognizable by their pointed ears — said to be shaped to hear the voices of the gods. The royal family is Hylian. Link and Zelda are both Hylian. They are the most widespread race and the most politically powerful in most eras. Hylians are not inherently magical but have great capacity to wield divine power when chosen.
🐟
ZORA
People of the Water
An aquatic race who live in and around Zora's Domain, fed by the waters of Lanayru. Elegant, intelligent, and long-lived — a Zora Elder may remember events from centuries past. Their greatest champions are their Champions (like Mipha) and their King. In BotW, Mipha loved Link and crafted Mipha's Grace for him. The Zora are noble but can hold grudges for generations. They control the flow of water to all of Hyrule — a power they take seriously.
🦅
RITO
People of the Sky
Winged warriors who live on Rito Village, a giant pillar of rock rising from the shores of Lake Totori. They are the greatest archers in Hyrule. Revali was the Rito Champion in BotW — talented, arrogant, and secretly insecure about Link being chosen over him. In TotK, Tulin (Revali's descendant) follows in his ancestor's footsteps. The Rito control the winds of the Hebra region.
🔥
GORON
People of the Mountain
Rock-eating giants who live on and inside Death Mountain, the great volcanic peak of Eldin. Gorons are incredibly strong, warm-hearted, and call everyone "Brother." Daruk was the Goron Champion in BotW — cheerful, powerful, protective. In TotK, Yunobo carries on his ancestor's legacy. Gorons mine and eat rocks and precious stones. Their Sage power in TotK is fire.
🏜️
GERUDO
Desert Warriors
An all-female warrior race who live in the Gerudo Desert. Once every hundred years, a Gerudo male is born — and by their law, that male becomes their king. Ganondorf was the most recent such male born — a king who chose power over his people and made a deal with the Demon King. Urbosa was the Gerudo Champion — fierce, brilliant, and deeply connected to the thunder of the desert. Gerudo law forbids men from entering their town. In TotK, Riju leads them.
👁️
SHEIKAH
The Shadow Folk
The ancient shadow warriors who serve the royal family. Their symbol is the Sheikah Eye — the same eye on this Slate. Ten thousand years ago, the Sheikah built the Divine Beasts, the Guardians, the Shrines, and the Sheikah Towers. When the king of Hyrule feared their power, many Sheikah were exiled and became the Yiga Clan — ninja assassins who now serve Ganondorf. Impa and her family are the most famous loyal Sheikah. Purah runs the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab.
🌿
KOROKS
Children of the Forest
Tiny forest spirits who wear masks and scatter 900 Korok Seeds across Hyrule as a game. They are the evolved form of the Kokiri from Ocarina of Time — the forest children who couldn't leave the woods without dying, because they had no true body. When they traveled on the Great Sea in Wind Waker, the Great Deku Tree transformed them into Koroks so they could survive. Hestu collects Korok Seeds and rewards Link with inventory upgrades.
🐊
LIZALFOS / BOKOBLINS / MOBLINS
Ganon's Forces
The primary enemy races of Hyrule. Bokoblins are small, tribal, and found everywhere — they use basic weapons and live in camps. Moblins are large, brutish spear-carriers. Lizalfos are fast, intelligent reptilians who can spit elemental attacks — fire, ice, or lightning depending on their type. All of these creatures are corrupted by Malice — Ganon's dark power — which is why they exist to destroy rather than build. Without Malice, they might be very different.
⟡ THE DIVINE & THE SACRED ⟡
🔺
THE TRIFORCE
The Relic of the Gods
The Triforce is three golden triangles left behind by the three goddesses. It grants the wish of whoever touches it — but only if their heart is in perfect balance between Power, Wisdom, and Courage. If a person with an imbalanced heart touches it, it shatters. The piece that corresponds to their dominant virtue stays with them. The other two pieces go to the people destined to carry them.
The Triforce of Power — carried by Ganondorf. It amplifies his strength and makes him nearly immortal. Even when defeated, as long as he holds the Triforce of Power, his spirit persists and he can be reborn.
The Triforce of Wisdom — carried by Princess Zelda. It gives her prophetic visions, divine insight, and the power to perceive truth. She can sense evil before it arrives and understand the will of the goddesses.
The Triforce of Courage — carried by Link. It gives him the resilience to overcome impossible odds and the clarity to act when others freeze. It is the rarest piece — not because courage is uncommon, but because pure courage without wisdom or power corrupting it is exceptionally rare.
🔥
GOLDEN GODDESS
Din — Power
The goddess of Power who shaped the physical world. Her domain is the earth, fire, and strength. She is not worshipped individually as often as the Triforce is, but her essence lives in the Triforce of Power. The Din's Fire spell is one of her gifts.
💧
GOLDEN GODDESS
Nayru — Wisdom
The goddess of Wisdom who gave law and order to Hyrule. Her domain is water, knowledge, and time. Nayru's Love is her protective gift. She is most closely associated with the Zora and with Princess Zelda's bloodline. Time itself is considered to flow under her watchful guidance.
🌿
GOLDEN GODDESS
Farore — Courage
The goddess of Courage who created all living things. Her domain is forests, wind, and life itself. Farore's Wind is her gift of travel. She is most closely associated with the Kokiri, the Koroks, and with Link's bloodline. The Great Deku Tree serves as her guardian spirit in the forest.
🦁
LESSER DEITY
The Great Deku Tree
The ancient guardian spirit of Kokiri Forest / Korok Forest. He speaks with the authority of the goddesses and has guided Link in multiple eras. When he is dying, he gives Link his first quest. He is reborn after his death. In BotW and TotK, an ancient Deku Tree guards the Master Sword in Korok Forest, which is inside a deadly maze of Lost Woods.
🐉
DRAGON SPIRIT
Farosh, Naydra, Dinraal
Three ancient dragons who represent the three goddesses in BotW. Farosh (green, Farore) roams Lake Hylia. Naydra (blue, Nayru) appears near Mount Lanayru. Dinraal (red, Din) circles Death Mountain. In TotK, a fourth dragon — the Light Dragon — carries Zelda herself after she swallowed a Secret Stone, transforming into an immortal dragon to send the Master Sword back through time.
⚡
ANCIENT KING
Rauru — First King of Hyrule
The very first king of Hyrule, who built the original kingdom before recorded history. He possessed the Sage of Light power and the ability to bestow Sacred Stones. He sealed Ganondorf beneath Hyrule Castle ten thousand years before TotK — and his arm, preserved through time, is grafted onto Link after the seal breaks. Rauru speaks to Link from across time throughout TotK. His wife was Sonia, who was killed by Ganondorf to steal her Secret Stone.
⟡ THE FORCES OF DARKNESS ⟡
Ganondorf — The Demon King
▶
Born: A Gerudo male, the only one born in a generation — making him the King of the Gerudo by law. He had access to power, wisdom, followers, and legitimate authority. He chose to throw all of it away in pursuit of the Triforce.
His Goal: Ganondorf does not simply want to destroy Hyrule. He wants to rule it. He sees the divine order — the Triforce, the goddesses, the cycle of heroes and chosen ones — as an insult. He was born with extraordinary power and forced to bow to gods who gave all their gifts to the Hylians. His rage is comprehensible. His methods are not.
Calamity Ganon: When Ganondorf dies and his hatred persists, he loses his intelligence and becomes pure malice — a force of destruction called Calamity Ganon. In BotW, he has given up on being reborn with a body and tries to consume the Divine Beasts and Guardians to build himself a new one.
Tears of the Kingdom: The original Ganondorf — the ancient Gerudo — was sealed beneath Hyrule Castle by King Rauru. He spent ten thousand years biding his time. When Link and Zelda accidentally broke the seal, he immediately resumed his campaign. He created Gloom, corrupted the Depths, spread darkness through the sky islands, and transformed himself into the Demon Dragon by swallowing his Secret Stone — the most powerful and irreversible transformation possible.
The Yiga Clan — Servants of Ganondorf
▶
The Yiga Clan were originally Sheikah — the shadow warriors who protected the royal family. When the king of Hyrule feared the power of the Sheikah technology they had built and exiled them, some Sheikah grew so bitter that they swore allegiance to Ganondorf instead. They became assassins, spies, and saboteurs who work in the shadows to serve the Demon King.
Their headquarters is a hidden base in the Gerudo Highlands. Master Kohga leads them — a loud, overconfident, bumbling leader who fights Link multiple times and loses every time in increasingly ridiculous ways. Despite Kohga's comedy, the Yiga Clan itself is genuinely dangerous — their members are skilled enough to disguise themselves as ordinary travelers and ambush Link anywhere.
Demise — The Curse at the Root of Everything
▶
Demise is the original evil — the demon king who existed before Ganondorf, before the Kingdom of Hyrule, before almost everything. He wanted to claim the Triforce and rule the world. He was sealed by the goddess Hylia and eventually defeated by Link in Skyward Sword.
Before dying, Demise placed a curse on the bloodlines of Link and Zelda: "Those who share the blood of the Goddess and the spirit of the Hero shall be bound to me forever in a cycle of reincarnation. My hatred will be reborn across the ages."
This curse is why Ganondorf keeps appearing. This curse is why Link and Zelda keep being reborn. Demise's malice became Ganon. The cycle exists because of him. Defeating Ganon does not end the cycle — it only resets it. True peace in Hyrule would require breaking the curse of Demise entirely.
⟡ THE CHOSEN HEROES ⟡
THE TRUTH ABOUT LINK: There is not one Link. There are many. Each Link is a reincarnation of the spirit of the hero — the same soul, the same courage, born into a different body in a different era to face a different incarnation of Ganon. They share the Triforce of Courage, the right to wield the Master Sword, and an unbreakable connection to whoever bears the Triforce of Wisdom in their time. But they are different people with different personalities, different childhoods, and different stories.
⚔️
LINK — BOTW / TOTK ERA
The Champion, The Wanderer
This Link was a royal knight, Zelda's appointed protector, before Calamity Ganon arrived. He was gravely wounded protecting Zelda and placed in the Shrine of Resurrection. He woke 100 years later with no memory.
In BotW he is quiet, resourceful, adaptable — a blank slate shaped by whoever he meets. In TotK he faces an even older evil with the broken Master Sword, Rauru's arm, and the power of Ultrahand, Fuse, Ascend, and Recall. He is arguably the most capable Link in all of Hyrule's history.
🕰️
LINK — OCARINA ERA
The Hero of Time
The Link who split the timeline. He was raised by the Kokiri in the forest, had no fairy until Navi arrived, and pulled the Master Sword too young. He traveled through time, mastered the ocarina, befriended the Sage of the Sages, and defeated Ganondorf — twice, in two timelines. His choice to go back to his childhood left Hyrule without its hero in the Adult Timeline. He is the most pivotal Link in history.
🌊
LINK — WIND WAKER ERA
The Hero of Winds
In the Adult Timeline, when Ganondorf escaped and threatened to return, the gods flooded Hyrule to stop him — covering the entire kingdom under a vast ocean. Centuries later, a boy on Outset Island named Link had his sister kidnapped by a giant bird. He found the King of Red Lions, a talking boat who was actually the ancient King of Hyrule, and sailed across the Great Sea — all that remained of old Hyrule — to find the Triforce pieces.
🌑
LINK — TWILIGHT PRINCESS ERA
The Hero of Twilight
In the Child Timeline, after young Link warned Zelda of Ganondorf's betrayal, Ganondorf was tried and exiled to the Twilight Realm — a shadow dimension. There he corrupted a man named Zant and used him to take over the Twilight Realm, then began spreading twilight across Hyrule. Link was transformed into a wolf when the twilight touched him, and guided by Midna, the true ruler of the Twilight Realm who had been cursed into the form of an imp. This Link is more serious and solitary than most.
⟡ PRINCESS ZELDA ⟡
THE TRUTH ABOUT ZELDA: Like Link, Zelda is reincarnated across time — always a princess or a figure of divine authority, always bearing the Triforce of Wisdom, always with prophetic sight. In most eras she is politically constrained — a princess who cannot act directly. But in several eras she acts disguised: as Sheik in Ocarina, as a pirate captain in Wind Waker, as a researcher in TotK before her transformation. Zelda is often smarter, better prepared, and more sacrificing than any other character in the story. In TotK she gave up her humanity — transformed herself into a dragon — to send Link the Master Sword across ten thousand years of time. She expected to never be human again. Link found a way to bring her back.
⟡ THE LANDS OF HYRULE ⟡
🏰
CENTRAL HYRULE
Hyrule Castle & Hyrule Field
The heart of the kingdom. Hyrule Castle stands at the center — the seat of the royal family, sealed by Zelda in BotW, corrupted by Ganondorf's Gloom in TotK. Hyrule Field surrounds it — an open plain that connects every region. Lookout Landing is the survey outpost in TotK. The castle's Sanctum is where Ganon always makes his final stand.
🌋
ELDIN REGION
Death Mountain
Death Mountain is the great volcano — home of the Gorons, constantly erupting, covered in lava rivers. Goron City hangs on its slopes. The Divine Beast Vah Rudania is a lizard-shaped machine that walks the mountain's surface. In TotK, volcanic rocks called Yunobo bombs can be launched by the Sage of Fire. The region is impassable without Flamebreaker armor.
💧
LANAYRU REGION
Zora's Domain
Zora's Domain is a luminescent city of stone and flowing water high in the Lanayru mountains. The Divine Beast Vah Ruta is an elephant that sprays water. Mipha's statue stands in the throne room. The Zora have memory going back centuries — they remember Link from 100 years ago and hold it against him that he "let Mipha die." In TotK, Sidon (Mipha's younger brother) leads them.
❄️
HEBRA REGION
Rito Village
A frozen tundra of blizzards and snowfields. Rito Village is built on a massive stone pillar with spiraling walkways. The Divine Beast Vah Medoh is a bird that circles overhead. The Rito are the best archers in Hyrule. In TotK, a perpetual blizzard has trapped them and Tulin must be freed from his father's overprotection to become the new Champion.
🏜️
GERUDO REGION
Gerudo Town & The Desert
A vast desert with scorching days and freezing nights. Gerudo Town is an all-female city — no men or boys allowed inside (Link must disguise himself as a woman). Kara Kara Bazaar is outside the walls. The Divine Beast Vah Naboris is a camel that generates lightning storms. The Gerudo Secret Club sells special desert armor. In TotK, Ganondorf's forces camp in the desert and Riju's lightning power is awakened.
🌿
FARON REGION
Korok Forest & Lost Woods
A humid jungle region south of Hyrule, home to the Korok Forest — which is inside the Lost Woods, a forest so cursed that travelers walk in circles forever. The Great Deku Tree guards the Master Sword here. In TotK, the Lost Woods has been filled with Gloom and the Koroks have fled. The forest is the spiritual heart of Hyrule — remove the Master Sword and the Great Deku Tree begins to die.
⟡ SACRED RELICS & WEAPONS ⟡
⚔️
THE SACRED BLADE
The Master Sword
The most sacred weapon in all of Hyrule. Forged from the Goddess Sword by the spirit Fi and blessed by Zelda's prayers. It is the only weapon that can permanently destroy Ganon — all other weapons merely seal or wound him. The Master Sword chooses its wielder — pulling it without sufficient courage will drain Link's life force. It replenishes its power over time. In TotK, Zelda sent it forward through ten thousand years inside the Light Dragon to ensure it reached Link fully restored.
🎵
INSTRUMENT OF TIME
The Ocarina of Time
A blue ocarina passed down through the royal family of Hyrule. It can open the Door of Time, play songs that control the weather, warp the player through time and space, and communicate across great distances. The Song of Time controls the Master Sword's resting place. Zelda's Lullaby is the signature theme of the royal family — recognizable to every loyal Hylian. The ocarina itself is a simple clay instrument made sacred entirely by the songs played on it.
🛡️
THE HYLIAN SHIELD
Link's Iconic Shield
The most durable shield in Hyrule — nearly indestructible. Decorated with the Hylian Crest and the Triforce. In BotW it can be won from a Stalnox in Hyrule Castle. In TotK it is found in the castle's depths. Every Link who has gone to war has carried some version of this shield. It is as iconic as the Master Sword and just as difficult to replace if lost.
💎
ANCIENT TECHNOLOGY
Sheikah Slate / Purah Pad
In BotW, Link wakes with the Sheikah Slate — a rectangular tablet built by ancient Sheikah technology that gives him Magnesis, Stasis, Cryonis, and Bombs. It also downloads map data from Sheikah Towers. In TotK it is replaced by the Purah Pad, upgraded by Purah's lab, which gives access to Ultrahand, Fuse, Ascend, and Recall — powers granted by Rauru's arm attached to Link's body.
🔮
DIVINE POWER
Secret Stones
Ancient stones from TotK that amplify a person's innate power. King Rauru distributed them to the original sages. When swallowed, a Secret Stone transforms the bearer into an immortal dragon — enormously powerful but no longer fully human. Zelda swallowed one to become the Light Dragon. Ganondorf swallowed one to become the Demon Dragon. It is the most extreme power in Hyrulean history — and it cannot be undone by normal means.
🌀
SEALING POWER
Zelda's Sacred Power
Every Zelda carries a divine sealing power — the ability to contain and suppress evil. In BotW, Zelda's power awakened at the last moment when Link was mortally wounded — a flash of golden light that repelled the Guardians and sealed Calamity Ganon inside the castle. She held that seal for 100 years alone. In most eras this power takes years of prayer and training to develop. It is directly tied to Zelda's faith — doubt suppresses it, acceptance unlocks it.
⟡ THE DIVINE BEASTS ⟡
Built by the Sheikah 10,000 years ago as weapons against Calamity Ganon. Each is a massive mechanical construct shaped like an animal, piloted by a Champion, armed with a cannon that can strike Ganon from any distance. When Ganon corrupted them, the Champions' spirits were trapped inside — and Link had to board each Beast, purge the corruption, and free the spirit to restore them. Each freed Champion then delivered a devastating blow to Ganon before Link's final battle.
🐘
LANAYRU — ZORA
Vah Ruta — Mipha's Domain
Shape: Elephant. Power: Sprays water, causes flooding. Champion: Mipha, Zora princess, healer, beloved of Link. She crafted Mipha's Grace — an extra life reserve that regenerates after use — as a gift for Link alone. Her spirit waited 100 years inside Vah Ruta for him. Her younger brother Sidon guided Link to the beast.
🦅
HEBRA — RITO
Vah Medoh — Revali's Domain
Shape: Bird. Power: Fires from altitude, controls air currents. Champion: Revali, the greatest Rito archer. Arrogant and gifted — he resented Link being chosen as the main hero and didn't hide it. His power is Revali's Gale — an upward wind column that allows Link to fly. Even in death, Revali was irritated about giving it.
🦎
ELDIN — GORON
Vah Rudania — Daruk's Domain
Shape: Salamander/lizard. Power: Launches magma bombs from Death Mountain. Champion: Daruk, the great Goron warrior — cheerful, immensely strong, called everyone "little guy." His power is Daruk's Protection — a crystal shield that blocks any attack. He is perhaps the most beloved Champion among the people of Hyrule.
🐪
GERUDO — GERUDO
Vah Naboris — Urbosa's Domain
Shape: Camel. Power: Generates massive lightning storms. Champion: Urbosa, the Gerudo chief — fierce, elegant, deeply loyal to Zelda whom she called "little bird." She hated Ganondorf personally because he was a Gerudo male — a shame to her people. Her power is Urbosa's Fury — a devastating lightning strike.
